Archived entries for Antlers

Let’s get sad.

The Antlers, brilliant musicians as they are, can really fuck a dude’s day up. But, if you’re in the mood to have your day ass raped with dragon tears, then go ahead and download their free EP, New York Hospitals. It’s great and it’s floating around out there. You can get it for free at the band’s myspace page, supposedly, but that shit didn’t work for me. If you know how to find music, you won’t have a problem, though.

What do we have on this bad boy? Genius, that’s what.

First, a Magnetic Fields cover that’s beyond awesome. Silbermann tackles Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing and it’s really great. It’s amazing how his haunted falsetto can completely carry you through a five minute track.

Next, we have an intro to Sylvia, the third track on Hospice. It reintroduces the melodic theme that’s prevalent throughout the records interludes, as well as on songs such as Bear and Epilogue. The only original tune on the EP, it’s exactly what you’d expect from something that got cut from an album as brilliant as Hospice. RE: probably good enough to be on there. I feel as though it should be inserted in all playlists including the whole album. I dunno. Just feels right.

And then Silbermann brings the fucking house down with a cover of Yo La Tengo’s Tears Are In Your Eyes. Prepare to get depressed, people. So, so, so fucking beautiful.

Check the sample below. Go download it for yourself somewhere else.

Decade Retrospective: Year 2009

This is a bit of a false entry, in a way. It’s false because I’ve already written about my top album of the year and I don’t want to go into detail about it again and bore the shit out of you. To me, the best album of the year was the gorgeous, well-crafted literary concept record Hospice by The Antlers.

Instead, I’m just going to talk about a few other highlights from the year. It’s been a decent year for music; mostly good records speckled with some really special ones, and also a few overrated guys thrown into the mix. But this is a time for celebration, so we won’t talk overrated. We’ll just talk about the good shit.

Top albums (other than Hospice) after the jump. Continue reading…
