Good Way to Start the Week
Thanks, James Murphy. Best song of the year thus far? Possibly. Best song ever? No. But, man, is it fucking good.

Did you get out to Record Store Day yesterday? If you did, I hope you were lucky enough to grab one of the limited 12″ singles Crystal Castles released as a tease to their forthcoming album (out June 8 from Fiction). This shit is fucking mayhem yo.

Stop listening to that stolen copy of This Is Happening for two minutes and support your local indie shops!
Yeah it’s a cover band staple and even the best artists have royally fucked it up (ahem…Broken Social Scene…).But I’m pretty sure even Ian Curtis would be proud of this rendition of “Love Will Tear Us Apart”.
Click here to check it out.
The Antlers, brilliant musicians as they are, can really fuck a dude’s day up. But, if you’re in the mood to have your day ass raped with dragon tears, then go ahead and download their free EP, New York Hospitals. It’s great and it’s floating around out there. You can get it for free at the band’s myspace page, supposedly, but that shit didn’t work for me. If you know how to find music, you won’t have a problem, though.
What do we have on this bad boy? Genius, that’s what.
First, a Magnetic Fields cover that’s beyond awesome. Silbermann tackles Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing and it’s really great. It’s amazing how his haunted falsetto can completely carry you through a five minute track.
Next, we have an intro to Sylvia, the third track on Hospice. It reintroduces the melodic theme that’s prevalent throughout the records interludes, as well as on songs such as Bear and Epilogue. The only original tune on the EP, it’s exactly what you’d expect from something that got cut from an album as brilliant as Hospice. RE: probably good enough to be on there. I feel as though it should be inserted in all playlists including the whole album. I dunno. Just feels right.
And then Silbermann brings the fucking house down with a cover of Yo La Tengo’s Tears Are In Your Eyes. Prepare to get depressed, people. So, so, so fucking beautiful.
Check the sample below. Go download it for yourself somewhere else.

Hooray! Fuckin’ Turbo Tax sounds like a great deal right? Yeah…until they gouge your ass for each state’s software. So, let’s numb that fiscal pain away with some homegrown and dancehall.
MAJOR LAZER!

Where were you when your eardrums exploded? Yesterday will almost certainly go down as one of the most infamous days since D-Day or 9/11. The day that the internet stopped giving a shit about what we were doing and decided to lay too much on us at once. Broken Social Scene and LCD Soundsystem records leaked on the same fucking day? I handled this as any sensible human being would, rigging up two massive stereo systems and playing them both simultaneously about an inch from my face until my nose starting bleeding. I wanted to find the hidden message contained within, if any. I didn’t.
I don’t want to talk about both at once because after that traumatic experience, it’ll only bring up bad memories. So, instead we’ll focus on them one at a time. One today, one tomorrow. Or the day after tomorrow. Or next week, if I get lazy.
Yes, it appears that David Bowie has finally created yet another record to add to his canon. Something intertwining all of his styles, from his mid-period dance pop that combined elements of punk and synth, to his 70s era records with smart, innovative pop music. Wait a minute. This isn’t a Bowie record, you say? It’s done by James Murphy, otherwise known as LCD Soundsystem? Someone has some explaining to do. Continue reading…
But, just an fyi. The new LCD Soundsystem record, This is Happening, has leaked and is all over the internetz.
Wait! There’s more! Forgiveness Rock Record, the new album from Broken Social Scene, is also floating around out there. Good gravy! I feel like I just got infected with smallpox. In a good way. (What?)
Remember, it’s illegal and highly irresponsible to go out and steal music. But I also know it’s tough to wait for such awesomeness to land in a record store. So, faithful Hood Rich-ians, promise me that if you go out and download these records, you’ll also go buy them when they come out. Deal?
Do with this information what you will. Just don’t download a trans-code. Tony will make fun of you. He’s a fucking snob.
Grum is a Leeds, UK based electro-house producer whose Christian name is Graeme Shepherd. He’s just released a new EP called “Can’t Shake This Feeling” which is filled with 6, count ‘em, 6 remixes and the original version of the track. I haven’t quite made up my mind about which track I like the best yet so I’ll give you the album version and a link where you can listen to the remixes and make up your own damn mind.

Guitar records are the shit when they’re done well. It’s a simple statement that I think is pretty true. Great guitar records have a certain aesthetic that isn’t matched by even the best records in different genres. The Arcade Fire and Animal Collective are two of the best bands of the past decade, but I’ll still put a White Stripes record on before them any time.
I’m not entirely sure why that is, to be honest. It just feels right in a way. There’s something to be said for bands like Animal Collective pushing forward and creating new ways to look at pop music. But, there’s also something so pure about music at it’s simplest. Just drums and a guitar lick and somebody wailing into a microphone. Maybe that’s why I like guitar records so much.
This week’s Hiatus Watch is the polar opposite of the last one, where we checked out MGMT’s incredible new album. The new Harlem album, called Hippies, is stripped down guitar rock at its finest. Continue reading…
